 "WOW!!! I love it!!" 2009-12-25

I use this with my Sony 52" LCD 1080p HDTV...and the sound is amazing. I was watching Valkyrie, and in the beginning of the movie it was just dialog...so I had the sound at the normal volume...all of a sudden guns and bombs were blazing...I had to turn the sound way down so my neighbors didn't think a war was starting in my house. :)

I love the fact that you can adjust the directionality of the satellite speakers into two directions...it's like getting two speakers in one. The sub-woofer is wonderful...solid performance...it can handle lots of base without making that irritable rattling sound that some sub-woofers make when they can't handle the job.

I also love the fact that this system really makes you feel like you're in the movie...cause it vibrates the room...when things blow up, it rattles the floors...it's awesome...with that said, if you have people living below you, you might not want to test this system to its full potential.

"Bose 10 versus Mirage Nanostat - Mirage wins with my ears." 2008-02-21
By Happy r/c (Scottsdale, AZ)
I have an Onkyo TSR605 receiver and I hooked up the Bose 10 speakers versus the Mirage Nanostat and the Mirage satellites are much, much clearer; also my old Onkyo woofer that came with my previous Onkyo Home Theater System produces much cleaner bass than the Bose (I started to get a headache with the Bose subwoofer because it was almost always booming when it shouldn't be and it was a muddled bass instead of a clean bass). I tested both with a movie (The Incredibles) and a concert DVD (Sarah Brightman). The Mirage Nanostat is about $500 without a woofer and the Bose 10 is $1000 but even if they were the same price, the Mirage is much clearer and won't give you a headache like Bose's subwoofer. For those who complain that the Mirage Nanostat center channel would be better if it pointed at you instead of the ceiling, I turned it so the speaker faced me to get a slightly louder sound but if this isn't good enough, I also hooked up the Bose center speaker and it acoustically matched the Mirage Nanostat speakers so you could always buy the Bose center speaker separately for $200. The Bose 10 speakers are going back to Best Buy tomorrow.

 "Excellent system, sounds fantastic!" 2007-12-24
By Hamweiser (Houston, TX)
I love this system! I've had it for about 6 months now and the sound is fabulous. The bass is deep and will shake the walls, and the speakers will blast crystal clear sound even when you turn the volume up to full blast.

I read a ton of reviews on different sites that have claimed Bose is just over-hyped junk, but I can honestly say that for this price range, this is a quality system. I currently have the system hooked up to a Sony receiver that puts out 110 watts per channel, and it can get L O U D! When watching concert videos and movies, you feel like you're there.

Obviously, someone looking to design a room totally dedicated to home theater use would go with a larger, more professional setup, but for typical living room style home entertainment, this system will do the trick.

"Excellent 5.1 Sound System from Bose" 2007-10-16
By Benjamin Chu (Walnut, CA)
I had bought this to be used with my new entertainment system comprising of Samsung HLT6187S 61" Slim LED Engine 1080p DLP HDTV, Sony STR-DG910 7.1 Channel Home Theater Receiver, Bose® Acoustimass® 10 Series IV home entertainment speaker system, Pioneer DV-400V HDMI Multi Region DVD Player, Rocketfish Universal Wireless Rear Speaker Kit and a custom HTPC.

The speakers are Bose satellite speakers. So they are very small, but they deliver excellent sound quality. You can swivel the top speaker to bounce the sound off walls to customize the feel you want for surround sound.

All connections are made from the massive sub woofer which then connects to your A/V Receiver. Too quite a bit of work to get this all working, but it was worth it in the end.

The speaker cable lengths are incredible. A little too long for what I needed. I ended up shortening and binding up more than 70% of the cable just so that I wouldn't have a crazy mess behind and around my HDTV.

If you plan on getting this system, save your self the trouble of dealing with cable mess and buy some Velcro straps for cable management.

This system works perfect with the Rocketfish Wireless speaker set.

The sub woofer is so powerful, at highest volume it shakes the entire house. You can feel the vibrations in the ground at the other end of the house.

Not much else to say. Setup was painless, just took some time, lots of cables going around.

Remember that the speakers are satellite speakers, if you get speaker stands, be sure they work with and fit with the satellite speakers.

Before buying this sound system, do your research and make sure you buy the right equipment!

"Bose AM10 Series III Speaker System - Absolutely incredible!" 2004-01-17
By K. Wyatt (St. Louis, MO United States)
Unbelievable and incredible are just two of the words that can only begin to describe the superb clarity, depth and range of sound the Bose Acoustimass 10 Series III Home Theater Speaker System delivers to your home theater! For years now, I've been using Bose 401's, 301's and the VCS-30 Series II Home Theater Surround set to bring that theater feeling into my home and have been proud and satisfied with the performance of these speakers but, after installing the Bose Acoustimass I had absolutely no idea what I was missing.

As part of the VCS-30 Series II Home Theater Surround set, the VCS10 Center Channel speaker provides a great addition to the home theater in so much as bringing voices out to the listener but it doesn't even come close to the clarity delivered by the center channel portion of the Bose Acoustimass 10 Series III. With this system, for the first time, I was able to hear everything that was being said on the screen without having to either roll back the DVD a bit or turn on the text function, making this purchase all that much more worth the price.

What's more incredible about this system is that despite the speakers being mounted on the wall several feet above the television set, the voices coming from the center channel sound as if they're coming directly from the television set.

The bass module, where everything connects to prior to connecting to your receiver, is a true wonder, in and of itself, delivering true bass and "feeling" to watching a movie! What's more incredible about this bass module is that you can place it just about anywhere and the bass that is delivered doesn't even sound as if it's coming from the module but from the many speakers.

Another important aspect to this system is the ease of installation. I found it quite simple to install this system in conjunction with the Bose UB-20W Wall/Ceiling Speaker Brackets to get those beautiful speakers up on the wall where they could do their job best; delivering exceptional sound.

If you do not wish to install wall/ceiling mounts, fear not, Bose has already considered this. All of the speakers are magnetically shielded so you can just about place them anywhere you wish. Bose also manufactures floor speaker stands for a modest price and they even have the UTS-20 Universal Table Stands that are quite reasonably priced as well.

In short, this system is truly wonderful and I would highly recommend it to anybody that is looking for a superior home theater speaker system without wishing to spend in excess of a thousand dollars! Once you've made the decision to purchase and install this system, be prepared to be blown away by the superior quality of the beautiful sound. This system is a true investment that will easily defray the initial costs. {ssintrepid}

"It does sounds good for its price." 2007-10-18
By Choppy (now in Singapore)
It seems like the first step to be an audiophile is to criticize Bose. I got lost on that path a little bit. I spent six months going around to listen to many others speakers (included Polk and Klipsch). Of course, I heard some decent speakers that sound better than Bose, but they usually cost at least $3,000 each. But, for the similar price range Bose is hard to be beaten. I decided to buy it because it always make me smile our of my poker face at Bose showroom (not because of the funny sale guy).

I decided to adopt a set of AM6. People at the store told me that I may have to wait for 45 days. I think, that's OK. But, I can't live without some nice music for 45 days. Then, I placed my order for the AM6 and also brought home a pair of an inexpensive Bose 161. The 161 alone sounds very OK for music. Anyway, my receiver is Onkyo TX-SR605S. And my audio sort is the Mac mini optically connected to the Onkyo receiver. I could make my neighbors dance with this set. However, the 161 alone is no good for movies.

45 days later, I got the AM6. So, the pair 161 are now the back surround speakers. With the AM6, I got a 7.1 system. The first Onkyo automatic setup was great for the movies the floor and the walls were shaking. for some reasons, the floor and the walls were still shaking for music too. That is a little too much for me. The bass wasn't like a strong punch. It was more like a really annoying subwoofer effect from the next room. I was a bit disappointed. However, a month later when I was playing around with the Onkyo remote control, I found that the Onkyo set volume level of subwoofer to -3. I manually changed it to +3. Now, it is a lot better for music. It does sound like what I heard in Bose showroom. The movie sound effect is still cool. I think, the reason that make Onkyo receiver set the volume level very low for Bose speakers, because Bose bass module is not exactly a subwoofer. It also produces some midrange sound, which could mess up Onkyo automatic speakers calibration. One more good thing that I like about the AM6 is, speaker cables are included. I don't have to worry about what cabel should I use or how much do I have to pay more. But please note that, the center speaker of AM6 is identical with the satellite speakers. So, it could be better of a system that has a real center speaker.

 "Very disappointed" 2007-04-26
By Remo Soldaini (APO, AE United States)
I'm no Audiophile as it were but I know quality when I hear it. I purchased the Acoustimass 6 (gen IV) on my belief and word on the street that Bose is the best. I'm sad to say don't believe the hype. They are good but not $899 good. The Bass is lame and the treble on the center channel drowns out the rest of the action if anyone is talking in the foreground. I'm running a Pioneer vsx2016 which is an awesome product. Anyway I plan to stay within this price range but take my business elsewhere, any suggestions? They are going to go back next week.

"I'm soooo glad I unloaded these on someone else" 2006-06-01
By montana_nick (Boise, ID)
I ditched my AM6 speakers through eBay and bought some good speakers instead. Anyone who likes Bose must only have their clock radio as a point of reference. I was able to sucker some chump into paying $400 for my Bose AM6 speakers, which I turned around into a set of Athena .5 speakers and a 10" Velodyne sub. All running from the same Pioneer VSX-D711 AV receiver as the Bose. My new speakers set me back about $350, leaving money left over for speaker wire and stands.

So, why am I so harsh on the Bose AM6 speakers? Well, they do look nice, but... they use proprietary speaker wires with speacial plugs. So, you have to use their wiring which really reduces the options for running wiring for the back surrounds. The small size is nice, but having speaker wire hanging out in plain site pretty much sucks.

Speaking of sucking, let's adress the major shortcoming of almost ALL Bose products, they just don't sound good. My budget Athena .5 speakers have a 1" tweeter and a 4" driver. This combo does a pretty good job of covering down to around 80Hz where the sub fills in. Not completely flat, but really nice for the price and signficantly better than what the Bose AM6 can do with its single 2.5" driver per speaker. The Velodyne sub can hit 30Hz and really fill in the low end, while the bass module (I refuse to call that Bose thingy a sub) doesn't get any where near that. And, since all 5 speakers are cabled through the bass module, you're really stuck finding a good place to hide it in your room.

So, what does all this mean? When watching a Dolby Digital or DTS movie, I can now actually notice the low frequency effects, and even feel them. with the Bose, you get muddled farting from the bass module (and, I suspect the cross over on the bass module is set pretty high in an attempt to compensate for the Bose Cubes' misserable low to mid range response, so you know where the sound is coming from, sort of distracting).

The overall sound stage is now much better with the new speakers, too. The Bose cubes were too easily localized, and didn't fill in the room very well. But... most important: when watching a movie, we can now actually hear the dialog! With the Bose AM6, it seemed like the music sound track and other ambiant sounds were constantly overwhelming the dialog. Turns out, this was due to the fact that crappy little cube speakers aren't able to effectively produce sound in that low to mid frequency range, where most dialog lives. Take a look at all the traditional center channel speakers everyone else sells, they usually feature a single tweeter and two or more mid-range drivers of decent size (4" to 6" depending on cost). Now, compare that to the single 2.5" driver found in the Bose cube "center channel". Which one do you think will do a better job of reproducing the full frequency of sound needed to enjoy a movie?

Sorry to ramble a bit, but I was a chump when I fell for the Bose marketing hype/BS. Now that I've learned that I can get significantly better sound for 1/2 the cost (and I'm sure there are scores of other options), I'd hate to see someone else get suckered in by the hype. So, go back to Amazon's speaker section and try something else; Athena is a great brand;) and I'm sure there are lots of other choices...

"Not worth the money or hype!" 2005-10-30
By AudioDreamer (Bend, OR)
I heard this set at my Grandfather's friend's house. I think the fella spent like $750.00 on it from a local outlet mall. What a waste of well earned retirement money! He had a higher end Marantz receiver firing these puppies, and let me tell you the receiver was being shamefully wasted on these speakers. The lower end frequencies were o.k. and the highs were sufficient. What I felt was missing was the solid mids and voice presence. Don't get me wrong, music sounded good. But, trying to watch a movie was like riding in a car with huge subs and tweeters in the front door pillars. The lack of mid-bass was a huge downfall with these speakers.

I spent $200.00 less on a set of Dahlquist 5.1A and feel like they sound like $1000.00 speakers. They have an even frequency response all the way across. In my opinion they look a whole lot better mounted too. I'm running them with a Marantz SR6200 DTS receiver and they perform flawlessly. I would totally recommend anyone that's considering a BOOOSE system to reconsider and shop around. GET YOUR MONEY'S WORTH, DON'T BELIEVE THE HYPE!

"Terrible sound with no mid-range" 2007-01-02
By Just a guy (Westchester, NY)
I am not sure why everyone has such a love affair with Bose speakers. Perhaps it is the marketing or the fact that the bass module produces a lot of bass (although it is not very accurate.) The largest problem with these speakers is that there is absolutely zero mid-range. The highs are decent and the lows are powerful, but there is nothing in the middle - zilch. Nada. I would not recommend buying these speakers. There are many better systems out there for the same money.

I am actually surprised at the number of negatives, thought that there would be some loyal blinded bose fans writing review.

Look, Bose really made a name for itself in the 70's early 80's when they had decent bookshelf speakers, they have totally fallen behind with the advent of surround sound, prologic, thx etc.

I agree with many of the comments that the cube speakers are totally worthless, sounds like you are playing a mono am channel. The subwoofer is the worst part of the system, my $50 altec lansing computer speaker system sub blows it away.

Needless to say I will never get sucked into another bose product since i am forced to by a new surround speaker system because of the complete and utter bose inadequacy

 "Satisfied" 2005-10-03
By B. Coburn (Seattle)
I have always run all of my media through my pc and my former speaker set (a Midiland 5.1 system) was thoroughly aged and falling apart I decided it was time to upgrade. I wanted something that had incredible sound with both music and dvd's. I shopped around and came to the conclusion I would aim for the form factor speakers. When considering this bose system, this MUST be taken into account.

First off, this system is expensive. For just under 1000 dollars (doesn't 999 sound sooo much better than 1g?) you get 5 bi-directional midrange speakers, the subwoofer unit, and speaker cable. At this price it is very disappointing that bose does not include some sort of receiver, but no matter this leaves room for the customer to customize his/her choice to suit any personal needs and/or budget. Bose includes 3 colors (white, silver, black) and all the speakers are well packaged and aesthetically pleasing with the exception of the sub unit (a large rectangular box meant to save space but does not).

What brought me to look into this system was the specific size of the speakers and there general attractiveness. For their size the bose do a very good job of reproducing any sound-granted they are paired with a competent receiver. Anyone who has any qualms about this system should first consider what they are running their sound through, without competent equipment these speakers will not be on par with what you heard in the store.

Once I got the system home it was very easy to set up and install. Bose packages the speakers with clear instructions and all of the wires are meant to be hidden and include markings as to what speakers they belong to-a very handy feature especially when one is trying to hide this system. The only serious issue I have with this system ended up being with my receiver (an Onkyo) and not related at all with the speakers.

Since I do run this through my computer (presently a laptop) I had a few troubles setting up a new sound card and getting it too mesh with my receiver, but when that was all said and done, I was extremely please with the system. With a bose the tweaking one needs to do is very minimal and thus why this deserves the higher price tag-its target audience is usually those more affluent and unable to spend hours tweaking individual speaker levels and sound ranges.

My test soundtracks included: Gladiator, Matrix (II or III), Snatch, and music tracks ranging from techno, rock, classical, and alternative. Everything sounded great with enough low, high, and midrange response. The second complaint I have with this system is not differentiating in the least between any of the satellites. I found myself turning the response on the center channel up so the front speakers weren't drowning out the voices. That was solved with a little tweaking so nothing major there.

All in all this speaker system is a great investment in my mind satisfying all of my needs (though draining my bank account) and providing me with great surround sound.

Good: Great range and volume of sound. Easy set-up. Well built speakers-aesthetically and physically. No interference or feedback.

Bad: Subwoofer awkward, no dedicated center channel, pricey, no included receiver.

For their size these speakers more than compete with any full-blown tower 5.1 system. Here is one satisfied customer.

This is a great system -- easy to set-up from the box -- but make sure you've enough power to feed to the speakers. If you've newer receivers with automatic accoustic calibration (i've this feature on my receiver), set-up is so easy to re-create theater sound in your living-room!

Highly recommended.
