I got myself "BOSE Companion 5" 5 days ago in an attempt to improve sound in my TV room. My TV room is longer than it is wider therefore all previous setups with floor standing speakers and surround channels did not work due to the sound bouncing all over the place. I just needed something smaller to improve our TV experience.



BOSS was a logical choice after I have heard my father's Companion 3 performance in his computer setup. The thing is - I already own "Cambridge SoundWorks FPS 2000 Digital" (CSW) 4 speaker surround set I got 9 years ago as a present from my wife "girlfriend back then" It has been performing admirably in my computer room on a 2nd floor to this day.



Back to BOSE: I got my speakers and paired them with IBM T60 laptop hooked up to my TV and Dish encoder/decoder. Ofter playing various audio files/CDs and listening to sound coming from TV and DVDs I was puzzled with luck of "OMG!!!I am blown away by this!!! OMG!!" factor. Something was wrong here. The speakers sounded OK but just OK. I have tweaked various Win 7 settings on my laptop in an attempt to achieve the breakthrough in performance to no avail. I even compared the same CDs and MP3 by listening to them through my CSW rig on the 2nd floor. And again I could not reach conclusive decision since side by side comparison could not be made. Finally I had enough and brought BOSS Companion 5 set to the 2nd floor to meet my workstation and "Cambridge SoundWorks FPS 2000 Digital"+ Soundblaster Live. BOSS speaker set was hooked up to my desktop under a minute and had a first go with Pink Floyd's "Wish you were here" in the CD drive. I turned the lights off and listened to the music. I've caught myself nodding - the performance was good.



Then I switched to the CSW setup and played the same song again and my jaw dropped. The sound was SOOO MUCH BETTER - full of character, warmth and soul. Exactly the qualities another reviewer [P. Lau] described in his post as "`warmth', `soundstage', `smoothness',`less fatigue'." These qualities were missing from Bose Companion 5 reproduction of the sound. This could be due to the fact that it is a new system which does not have a lot of "burn in" time yet or it could be something else. Nonetheless, the difference is profound enough for me to send it back for a refund. I guess I must give Bose another shot some other time. Once again they did not sound bad, no no, they sounded OK but just not better than Cambridge SoundWorks FPS 2000 I already own. I might have kept them if they weren't caring BOSE name and were under $99 or I did not have a chance to compare them to my existing system.



Once again I do like Bose brand and will not bash them needlessly. Make up your own mind since this review is based on my personal biased experience. My father seems to like them better than my CSW setup - go figure!

I resisted getting computer speakers for a long time, but finally when a new monitor had barely audible sound, I broke down and bought these. Wow, so much more and better than I was expecting. My husband is a complete analog geek and will only listen to CD and vinyl, but he said he would actually consider listening to iTunes now because of how good this sounds. I think I had had $99 computer speakers once that went into a box during a move and I never bothered unpacking them, so I was expecting only a slight upgrade from those. I also had the old Bose Acoustimass system for a stereo once and was never much impressed with it, I think it's in the basement storage now. For these, in the same room, they are comparable with our stereo system and slightly less so from another room. I'm going to get a pair of these for my new office and also am seriously considering an upgrade in headphones as well. I'm a believer.

Until a few years ago, I used nothing but the cheapest speakers and headphones I could fine. Bargain-bin all the way until I picked up a pair of high-end Sennheiser headphones and I finally "heard the difference" - since then I've gotten picky and have only wanted the best. After upgrading to a surround-sound system for my TV, I wanted a similar experience for my computer and after a bit of research, the Companion 5 was the way to go. These speakers are the equivalent of my Sennheiser headphones - I can hear stuff in music that I've never heard before (it's actually kind of strange!). It really takes sound to the 'next level' compared to the other speakers I've tried. I tried the Logitech systems, I even tried the other Bose Companion models, but they just couldn't compare.



To me, this system has 3 downsides - all of them are pretty big and take a hit on the score (hence the 4 stars instead of 5).



The first downside is the price - it's definitely better than the other systems I've seen, but it's also twice the price. With that said, trying the Companion 3 next to this (which sells for half the price), I was still happier to put down the extra cash for the Companion 5 series. It's still a very expensive system though.



The 2nd downside is the proprietary setup - rather than using a normal audio plug, this system connects to your pc via USB port and requires drivers. This isn't always the easiest thing to do, and you have to rely on the drivers always being available/compatible with your system. It gives more chances for error to occur.



The final downside are the other audio connections. Fortunately you CAN plug other devices into the audio volume knob. Unfortunately, it only takes a 3.5mm headphone plug. This would have been fantastic if it had accepted optical audio or even composite audio (to plug a game console into, for example). I had to purchase a Composite-to-3.5mm Y-adapter to plug a console into it, and besides being a hassle, it lessens the quality.



The volume knob is very nice - it has a headphone jack, 3.5mm input, and mute/unmute button in addition to changing the volume by turning it left or right.



The sound quality is amazing from this - I've never been a BOSE fan, but this thing is incredible. One last downside from it, is that it will show any flaws in low-quality audio you may have. Low-quality MP3s? You'll hear the difference. Youtube videos? you'll hear the difference. But when you pop in a DVD, Blu Ray or listen to a high quality MP3, the system really shines!

i've used pretty much every computer speaker system out their from $20 up to $500, and these Bose Companion 5's are by far the best i've ever used. i was nervous when i spent $400 plus tax on these puppies, but after 3 years, i'm more than satisfied. not one problem with these speakers. and they make my 300GB music collection sound great. you simply can't go wrong with these speakers. if anyone tells you that their music sounds muddy, etc, its their music, not the speakers. these speakers are worth every penny i paid for them, and then some.

I am not a distinguished listener, but I do own some quality gear. These are total mud. The mids and lows are completely washed out; they seem that they are trying to be "boomy". As another reviewer mentioned, there's nothing regarding the frequency response in the documentation, a small warning flag. I wanted some cheap speakers for my desk without taking up a lot of room, and from a physical perspective, these are great. But the sound they produce is just garbage, unfortunately. My 1998 Yamaha MST-15 computer speakers sound better.



Note that I bought these for casual music listening. They are probably fine for games, where the music is secondary to the sound effects.

1. NO POWER SWITCH. Truly a deal breaker. No way to turn them off without unplugging. If you hear a hum in the room turn the volume all the way down. The hum is still there although it is much harder to hear.

2. WASTES POWER. Because of the above flaw these will constantly consume power if they are not unplugged.

3. NO TREBLE / BASS ADJUSTMENTS. Would be OK, but as they come they need the treble turned up.

4. MEDIOCRE SOUND.



And of course the question I would ask if I was the one reading this review. So what's better?

In answer to my own question. Shall we make a list :)

I do not have a lot of speakers and am by no means an audioaholic, but I do have ears and eyes. I have a set of Klipsch 2.0 speakers that I got for $60. They are twice the speakers these ever dreamed of being.



Why did I give them 2 stars? Small size. They are slightly smaller than the Klipsch. Approx. 2" shorter with about the same footprint.



I bought these because of the rage reviews, but if I had realized the things listed above it would have saved me a bunch of money.



By the way.... both your eyes and ears can be deceived. I just wanted some attention to the review.

I have been in the need for new computer speakers for years. Decided on these mostly due to the Bose reputation and ended up purchasing locally. I bought them primarily for listening to music while working from the home office and therefore I didn't require or desire a separate sub. I also didn't want or need treble/bass/tone adjustments. If you need to adjust those kinds of settings you are using the wrong equipment.



The Bose Companion 2 Series II multimedia speakers are amazing. They really hit the mark from the highs to the lows. Distortion free and crystal clear. You could debate the dollar/value ratio all day but in the end these speakers just plain sound fantastic. If you want uncompromising sound from your computer it really doesn't get any simpler.

I bought these (together with a small bass speaker) to beef up the sound from an iMac. The connector cable supplied with the speakers was erratic - had to twist/jiggle the connection at the computer to get any sound, and when I let it go, the sound stopped. While the connector was working, there was a lot of static coming through so it wouldn't have been a long-term relationship even if the connector had worked properly. We wanted more distance between the speakers than the supplied cords permitted anyhow, so I picked up a pair of Belkin gold-plated cables (PureAV Miniplug to RCA Y Audio Cable, 7 feet; and PureAV Mini Stereo Extension Cable, 6 feet), and those have solved the problem. The speakers worked fine as soon as we connected the new cables, and we're happy with the quality of sound given the price we paid for the speakers. One star off the ratings for the runaround, but it was an easy fix given that we are close to an outlet for electronics equipment.

My HP G71 Notebook is great except that it lacks good internal speakers. To compensate for this, I went with these Bose Companion 2 Series 2 speakers based upon the Bose name. My desktop is crammed with accessories and I did not want to have to make room for a big subwoofer unit. These speakers are small, nice looking, and happily, they match the silver-and-black styling of my HP Notebook computer. They look great on my desktop.



Fortunately, these speakers produce wonderful sounding bass (as well as treble and midrange) with no subwoofer. The speakers are small, but they produce very decent sound within their design limits. Their design limits are simple: these speakers are not particularly powerful. They are pretty much intended to provide sound for a small room, mainly to someone near the notebook computer. These speakers are not going to rock the house for a party or anything like that. But if you want to watch movies on your notebook computer in the den or whatnot, these are hard to beat.



Within these limits, these are great speakers. The sound is pretty much everything you can ask for in terms of quality, including nice rich bass. That is what I wanted. So long as the user does not intend to fill a very large space with sound, it is hard to do better than these speakers, especially for the modest price.



One nice thing about these speakers is that they appear to be well-insulated electronically. I have a lot of electronic gear in my shack, and another speaker setup that I used to run picked up a lot of interference from my network hub and other devices. These speakers do not. Good engineering by Bose.



UPDATE: After using these speakers for my Notebook over the long weekend, I decided to add a second pair for my main desktop computer. That vote of confidence may help others understand the extent to which I am impressed by these excellent speakers.

These speakers live up to the quality you would expect from Bose. For those complaining about the lack of mid-range response, the small speakers handle the middle well if you use the equalizer in i-tunes or an adjustment in your sound card to find the audio "sweet spot" where the sound is optimized the way you like it. Once you have done that, these speakers make it seem like the orchestra or band is performing right in front of you. Horns and strings are clear and distinct with no distortion. Guitars sound true. You can almost hear fingers touching the keys of the piano. This is true at comfortable volume levels.



I have the subwoofer under the computer desk snd it supplements the higher range sounds nicely when set at my comfort level. You should experiment with it. The bass is smooth and undistorted.



It's hard to believe these small speakers deliver such a big sound! You will not regret paying the Bose "premium" for the quality. These are a big upgrade from my Creative speakers (which also sounded pretty good!). With the Companion 3's, your computer will become a nice place to escape from daily stress.



The hockey puck controller is very slick with the touch-sensitive mute button and the two jacks for headphones and a second audio source.

My teenage son is totally disgusted. His mom won't shut up and stop singing.



I love, love, LOVE the sound from these speakers! I can't get any work done because I keep crankin' them up and singing. You get lost in the music. Every guitar string and drum beat is distinct and fabulous. I use them on an nVidia sound card in a very large room with good acoustics, and the sound is just AMAZING.



Buy them.



UPDATE: Just plugged my Bose earbuds into the hockeypuck that sits on my desk. Unbelievable bliss. Sends a shiver down your spine.



I'm not really a brand fanatic, but I have to say this combo wins my complete loyalty. I am also just your average listener who appreciates music - not exactly someone who understands a damn thing about woofers, tweeters and all that jazz. But, MAN. This is fantastic. Hope I don't damage my eardrums; I just can't bring myself to turn down the volume.

I bought these a few years ago to give them time to break-in and develop their sound stage, etc. What I discovered has left me disappointed.



When I opened the packaging, the first thing I noticed was that there were no gold connections. For $250, the connections should be gold, and the wires of a higher quality, but instead they give you the cheapest things they had. When I set it up, I noticed that the speakers would go in and out, and would always have a hiss. I bought a better cable that connects the computer to the speakers, and some of the hiss went away, but the speakers would go in and out. I found the reason for this was due to the connection of the volume thing to the back of the sub. It's a flimsy connection, and if it isn't in right, the speakers don't work. If I get it in right, I can't move the sub without having the speakers go out. Very frustrating.



Now when they are working correctly, they sound pretty good. However not worth $250. If you listen to music for an extended period of time (over 1-2 hours) the sub gets very hot even when well ventilated. And while you can crank up the volume on these and they feel like 1000 Watts worth, that quickly ends, and in about 30 minutes they aren't much louder than my headphones. Furthermore, if you're playing mp3's a lot, the encoding of the songs better be pretty high, or you'll hear a lot of digital artifact. I save my music as lossless, so I don't have a problem there, but many listeners may.



The Bass is good, but soon dims out by the end of a CD. And if you turn up the volume, they seem to limit how loud they can get, and eventually drown out under the highs. The speakers are also good at normal volume, but unacceptable for a party as they sound metallic and mechanical, not warm like some bose systems. My speakers are set up to an amp from my computer that helps drive them, but I have found that for $100 less you can get logitech or creative and have just as good of sound. Bose makes some good products, but they start at a higher price; these don't quite satisfy the ears.



I would not recommend these for any listener, because using these in the office leaves you listening to hiss and better computer systems are available at a cheaper price.

I have never purchased a Bose product. I ve heard the quality in the Bose Factory stores,but the price was too high for my budget. As much as I would love the Waveradio,I couldn't justify shelling out $300 plus for it. I ve seen the original Waveradio at $199 here,so that could be a future purchase.



I was in Sams last week and saw these speakers for $70. They sounded great in the store,so i picked up a pair. The sound is incredible from these tiny speakers. I use it to listen to CDs and my XM radio,and I couldn't be more pleased. The bass is powerful and the seperation exceeds my expectations.



For $70, I made a great move. I know this particular brand has been discontinued to make room for the Series 2,but I am very happy with this purchase.

I really wanted to like these speakers - and for the most part I did when listening to a pair in a local Sams Club. As many of the reviews here have stated there are highs and lows with the Companion 2 speakers.



First the Highs: I was very impressed with both the amount of Bass produced, and the clarity of the sound coming from the speakers. Individual instruments were clear and crisp, and not distorted or muffled. And there was plenty of bass for most casual music listening - probably the best I've heard from a 2.0 system.



Unfortunately, there were several Lows that crippled the speakers (in my opinion). First, from a sound quality perspective, there was a dramatic channel separation between left and right that never let a vocal track converge in the center of the listening stage. In other words, a main vocal track that normally (in my other higher end 2.1 systems) appears to come from directly front and center in the audio stage was instead very evident coming from both right and left speakers. It gave an odd surround sound feel that didn't seem natural to me. Secondly, the main speaker (with the volume control) apparently had less than adequate shielding as it was picking up a static/crackling when placed in close proximity to our Mac Mini that it was connected to. Move it further away and it was okay, move it closer and it started to crackle.



I have several other Logitech speakers (Z3 and X230) that I'm very happy with, so I also tried a set of the X-140's with this same Mac Mini setup. While I believe the sound was a bit more crisp in the Bose (and the Bass was more full), the voice is much better placed in the X-140s, and the Bass is the next best in a 2.0 system I've heard next to the Bose. They also very clear sound - and, there is no static or crackling from the X-140 even when placed directly on top of the Mac Mini.



So, while the Companion 2 speakers have some very strong features, in the end I was overall disappointed and I'm keeping the X-140s instead as a very capable 2.0 setup - and for less than 1/2 the price of the Bose.

I wasn't even looking for computer speakers when I found these on display in a local wholesale club and basically bought them on impulse. The Companion 2's pretty much instantly grabbed my attention by the sound coming out of them so I looked carefully to make sure there wasn't a subwoofer hidden somewhere (there wasn't). I left the store but came back later in the day and bought them. They did not disappoint once I got them home and hooked'em up. Simply put, they deliver a quality of spaciousness to the music that you just don't hear in your average computer speaker (or even some larger so-called "hi-fi" speakers in many cases). "Boxiness" is not a characteristic that applies to these speakers because they project the soundfield out into the room (the "TruSpace" technology), and the bass output is pretty amazing for such small speakers. Consequently, you find yourself more immersed in the music or computer audio you're listening to. But they don't have to be limited to a computer - you can put them in a small bedroom and hook up an MP3 player. I've never owned any Bose product before but I highly recommend this speaker system.

Although this model is discontinued the performance is not. I have always been a Bose fan but have not been able to afford them until I took a chance on the used ones I just got. They did not disappoint. I used these to replace the 5 speaker sub-woofer system I had and the Bose out perform them with no question.
